Dow Chemical Co. and the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding for a multi-year research collaboration to jointly develop next-generation materials for advanced-battery technologies. Dow and Argonne, the largest national laboratory by size and scope in the Midwest, will work to develop several new materials with a goal of improving the performance, cost-competitiveness and adoption of the materials in the energy-storage industry.
The Dow and Argonne collaboration comes at a time when electric-vehicle manufacturers struggle to slash the cost of the batteries that power EVs and to improve the driving range of the vehicles between charges. The announcement also comes at a time when utilities, anticipating greater demand for electricity from EV owners, look for methods to store more energy. Numerous forecasters have predicted the number of all-electric or hybrid-electric vehicles will surpass the number of conventional automobiles in the United States and elsewhere by 2035, if not sooner.
