General Motors Co. said today it is joining with Relayrides in a peer-to-peer car-sharing venture that marks GM’s first wide-ranging involvement in the car-sharing movement. Relayrides is a peer-to-peer network that enables owners to rent their vehicles when not being used, setting the rates and availability of the vehicle. Relayrides operates an online marketplace to enable the transaction and offers $1 million of insurance “to make the transaction safe and convenient,” the companies said in a release.
The OnStar telematics hardware installed in many GM vehicles will allow a vehicle borrower to unlock the vehicle via smartphone, the release said, while ignition keys apparently would be locked in the vehicle by the owner. Vehicles not fitted with OnStar will require a module to enable remote unlocking. The Relayrides service currently is available in San Francisco and Boston, with “plans plans to strategically expand to U.S. areas that demonstrate high consumer demand.”
