Automotive supplier Johnson Control Inc. said it has developed a head-up display system called Combiner Head Up Display that is inexpensive enough to use in small and non-luxury cars and doesn’t require vehicle-specific components and integration typical of today’s head-up display systems. The Combiner Head Up Display uses a “transparent” screen that rises from the dashboard in front of the driver onto which full-color information is projected. The company unveiled the system in this week in its ie:3 demonstrator car.
Johnson Controls said in a release the new head-up display system can project information such as speed and navigation-unit directions in three-dimensional view, while the integrated screen means the vehicle no longer requires calibration of the head-up display with a film placed on the windshield. The system also means the vehicle does not require special handling in the event the windshield is damaged.
