Ford, VW and Toyota Singled Out For Ethical Business

Calvert discovered something rather counter-intuitive in the midst of the auto bailouts (Calvert)

During the time of depressing bailout headlines and fatalistic Detroit naysayers in 2008, it would have been hard to see any benefit in that gloominess. But what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger, and Calvert Investments has found a resurgence in American sustainability because of the hardship.

The firm, known for it's focus on sustainable and responsible investments, singled out Toyota Motor Corporation, Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen AG for praise in its latest recognition for automakers with exceptional environmental, social and governance (ESG) practice. In evaluating such issues as environmental sustainability and workplace practices, the Calvert Sustainability Research Department found that, despite the recent economic turmoil, the American auto industry has emerged with a fundamentally different and more positive approach to sustainability.

American automakers, especially, are more focused than ever on making cleaner, more efficient vehicles, and proving less resistant to more aggressive fuel economy and emissions standards.

The car companies, of course, have little choice but to comply with toughening fuel economy regulations (there is a requirement for all U.S. fleets to average 54.5 mpg by 2025), but they are also more compliant because they realize consumers, especially younger ones, are holding fuel economy and sustainability on a higher plane of values they are looking for in brands they buy.

"Global automakers are making major strides in the right direction on several key issues," Calvert Sustainability Analyst Rebecca Henson said. "This is an encouraging development that reflects the emergence of more thoughtful industry leaders who recognize that ESG considerations are now essential."

What was the criteria for choosing these three automakers? Calvert took into consideration seven environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) criteria: workplace practices; human rights; Indigenous Peoples' rights; governance and ethics; product quality and safety; community relations; and environment.

Among the things the study looked at: fuel economy of a company's whole showroom; development of electric vehicles, hybrids and clean diesel; supporting efforts to mine minerals and precious metals required for auto production in sustainable ways and in countries that have good human rights records; workplace safety and working conditions.

Ford was singled out for exemplary human rights/workplace practices and was ranked number one in the world for all industries in Human Rights on Corporate Responsibility Officer Magazine's 2010 and 2011 "Best 100 Corporate Citizens List." Volkswagen was praised for the best product safety practices. Toyota has the top environmental track record. "Throughout the global recession, we never lost sight of the environmental and social goals that are key elements of our business strategy," said Dave Berdish, sustainability manager at Ford.

GM and Relay Rides lede.jpg

General Motors and RelayRides, a neighbor-to-neighbor car-sharing online marketplace, have announced an exclusive relationship that will allow owners of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac vehicles who subscribe to the OnStar system to use it to rent out their automobiles. The program, which will launch in early 2012, is GM's first major involvement in car sharing. San Francisco-based RelayRides allows private automobile owners to rent their vehicles on a short-term basis, via an online interface. Lenders and borrowers can set their own prices, and the company takes 15 percent.

The service is currently limited to Boston and San Francisco, but RelayRides has national ambitions. The company, which has received financial support from Google Ventures, estimates that vehicle owners can earn from $2,300 to $7,400 annually, based on hourly rental rates that typically range from $6 to $12. In the United States, Canada and China, drivers and passengers of vehicles equipped with the OnStar system and who pay for the service can use its audio interface to contact OnStar representatives for emergency services, vehicle diagnostics and directions.

RelayRides will leverage OnStar technology through a mobile application planned for early next year to allow customers to check for available vehicles, make a online reservation online as well as check future reservations, locate their reserved vehicle via GPS and lock and unlock the vehicle, all through their smart phones. For vehicles that are not OnStar enabled, RelayRides must install a small device in the car to provide access to borrowers. According to Innovative Mobility Research, car sharing in North America has grown from 400,000 users in 2009 to 640,000 in July 2011. A study from Frost & Sullivan projects car sharing will have an estimated 4.4 million users by 2016.

NEW AUTOMOBILE, Saab Owner Seeks To Divest Supercar Business

Swedish Automobile NV, the owner of struggling Saab Automobile AB, announced today it is selling the portion of its operations that builds Spyker-brand high-performance cars to U.S. private equity firm North Street Capital LLP. Bloomberg news service reported, however, that the $44 million sale is based on undisclosed conditions and that there is no guarantee the sale will take place.
Earlier this year, it was believed Swedish Automobile would sell the Spyker supercar business to a company owned by Russian businessman Vladimir Antonov, who for some time also sought to invest in Saab, which earlier this month won approval in Sweden for a reorganization plan protecting it from creditors as it seeks to solve its ongoing liquidity crisis. Saab has not produced any vehicles at its assembly plant in Trollhattan, Sweden, since June. Bloomberg reported, meanwhile, that if the Spyker business is sold to North Street Capital, Swedish Automobile CEO Victor Muller would remain as CEO of Spyker.
