Mercedes SLS Black Series spied

These pictures are proof that Mercedes is working on a hardcore 208mph Black Series version of its SLS AMG supercar. The powered-up and pared-down Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series, spied here in testing for the first time at the Nurburging, will go on sale in 2013, costing around 50 per cent more than the ‘standard’ £168,395 gullwinged-coupe.

Autocar understands the decision to make a Black Series version of the SLS was taken as far back as 2006 when development of the standard AMG supercar first begun. The Black Series’ dramatic bodywork, including a large fixed rear wing, front splitter, rear diffuser and extra cooling on the bonnet, and wider track was first previewed on the SLS GT3 racer at the 2010 New York motor show.

AMG engine boss Friedrich Eichler said in 2009 that there was still “a good deal more to come” from the SLS’s 6.2-litre V8 engine, which produces 563bhp and 479lb ft in the standard car.

Mercedes insiders have revealed that outputs of around 600bhp and 500lb ft are likely in the Black Series. A larger air manifold, higher compression ratio and reprofiled camshafts are among the tweaks expected. A mechanical locking differential is also tipped to be included as part of the Black Series upgrades and the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox will be beefed up to handle the extra torque.

These performance upgrades, plus a 50kg reduction in kerb weight and improved aerodynamic package, are expected to result in a 0-62mph time of 3.5sec and a top speed of 208mph. The standard SLS can crack 0-62mph in 3.8sec and reach a top speed of 197mph.

The new BMW 3 Series: details

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

This is the most important new car of the year. Scratch that. With all due respect to the VW Golf, this is the most important new car of the next few years. It is, impassioned Internet hounds, the all-new BMW 3 Series.

BMW has released lots of information about its bread-and-butter model; the car that has the biggest responsibility of ringing enough cash registers to allow the creative freedom to build fabulous M cars.

So, here we are. It's the sixth-generation of the venerable junior executive, and retains its trademark rear-wheel-drive and 50:50 weight distribution, together with a chassis that's 50mm longer and 37mm/47mm wider front and back than the current model.

See more pics of the new BMW 3 Series

BMW has stiffened up the body, and the five-link rear chassis setup from the E90 has been "improved and refined", while up front, aluminium struts, wishbones and swivel joints complete the fully independent setup. BMW also claims the electromechanical power steering doesn't trade any accuracy or precision. This is something they have to get right.

And powering this new body - lightened by up to 50kg - is a dizzying range of turbocharged engine variants. First up, the 316d and 318d diesels will produce 116bhp and 143bhp respectively, while the 320d will come with a 184bhp version, and a 163bhp Efficient Dynamics model. That latter variant records a claimed 68.9mpg and returns just 109g/km of CO2, and is now available with an eight-speed auto. A six-speed manual is also available.

The 320i, powered by a new turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, will produce 184bhp and just under 200lb ft of torque, while the 328i gets a 245bhp/258lb ft version of this engine. Sadly, it replaces the old naturally-aspirated sixer from the 325i and 330i, but records a 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds and fuel consumption of 44mpg, which is some consolation.

The 335i gets the same twin-turbo 3.0-litre six-pot as before.

BMW is fitting 17in alloys with run flat tyres (groan) as standard to every single Three, except the 320d ED, while variable sport steering and M sport suspension with electronically controlled dampers are, naturally, an option.

Inside, the new 3 Series gets 15mm more knee room and 8mm more headroom in the rear, while the height of the rear door and its opening angle have both been increased to ease your ingress/egress. Boot space on the saloon rises to 480 litres, up 20 litres from before.

In addition to BMW's standard trim line-up (ES, SE, Sport, M Sport) comes ‘Modern' and ‘Luxury', and standard spec across all cars includes air-con, Bluetooth, a 6.5in colour screen with iDrive, keyless starting, USB, multi-function steering wheel, cruise control and automatic boot opening.

The new BMW 3 Series will make its public debut at the Detroit motor show in January 2012, and will go on sale in the UK on 11 February 2012. Prices start at £24,880 for the 316d ES.

And, here's a little liqueur to help digest this information: BMW has confirmed that a four-wheel-drive 3 Series will appear near the end of 2012, along with a hybrid powertrain that marries the 335i's 306bhp straight-six with a 54bhp electric motor. Anyone else lightly combustible over a possible four-wheel-drive, high-performance Three?

BMW Unveils Sixth-Generation 3 Series

For consumer-electronics techies, October 14, 2011 marked the long-awaited arrival of the Apple iPhone 4s, but in Munich, Germany, it was the day the BMW Group officially introduced the highly-anticipated sixth-generation of its all-important 3 Series sedan. Appropriate for the car that accounts for one of every three vehicles BMW sells, the unveiling was an extravaganza that was streamed live via social media outlet Facebook. The event opened with a tribute to the more than 10,000 workers who have assembled the car in the heart of Munich since the first 3 Series was introduced in 1975. A sampling of the previous five generations of 3 Series models followed by a representative of virtually every configuration of the upcoming sixth-generation paraded from the plant to the stage for the official unveiling by BMW’s full board of management.

The importance of the 3 Series to the German automaker and to the entry-luxury segment that the 3 Series pioneered can’t be overemphasized. The 3 Series is the best-selling BMW model of all time with more than 12 million sold globally; it currently is sold in 132 countries. The 3 Series accounts for one of every three BMWs sold around the world; the sedan specifically accounts for one of every five BMWs the automaker sells. The 3 Series carries even more of BMW’s load in one of the company’s  biggest markets, the United States, where it currently represents 40 percent of the automaker’s total sales, according to Edmunds.com’s calculations. That percentage is down from the past due to the host of new vehicles BMW has added to its line over the years and the age of the current 3 Series. Edmunds.com’s database  shows that in 2002, fully half of all BMWs sold in the United States were the 3 Series. “The 3 Series is still the most significant car within BMW’s lineup and has been for a while,” says Edmunds.com Analyst Ivan Drury. “BMW needs to keep the 3 Series at the top of its class, not only for bragging rights, but also because it’s the entry-level car that will hopefully steer buyers on a path to other vehicles in the BMW family for many years to come.”

bmw 3 series share of bmw sales.jpgThe redesigned 3 Series, which arrives in the United States in February as a 2012 model, can’t come soon enough for BMW. So far this year, BMW has sold 66,593 3 Series models. That’s 44 percent more sales than the 3Series’ closest competitor, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The 3 Series makeover comes a year or so ahead of the C-Class, which will be assembled in the United States when it undergoes a re-make, and the Audi A4. “While there is still a good amount of distance between the rival entry-luxury vehicles, BMW’s redesign comes as the C-Class has narrowed the gap in recent years,” noted Drury.

2005-2011 entry luxury car sales.jpgThe sales race among entry-luxury models is a critical driver in the race for overall luxury-brand sales supremacy. At the moment, with Toyota’s Lexus crippled by production disruptions caused by the March 11 earthquake in Japan, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are slugging it out for U.S. luxury car sales leadership.

Luxury sales in Jan-Sept 2011 vs 2010.jpgAt Friday’s unveiling, Ian Robertson, BMW’s board of management member  responsible for global sales and marketing, acknowledged the 3 Series’ importance to the brand. “The 3 Series has driven the BMW Group’s dynamic growth,” he said, adding it also has been a pioneer but introducing a host of variants, which for this generation  includes a 4-cylinder engine for the U.S. market, and state-of-the-art technology. It has also earned “affection” from a loyal owner base, said Robertson. He gave a peek at 3 Series advertising that featured athletes in individual and team sports, noting the common thread in winning was passion. The ads close with the tagline “passion wins.”

"And we’re just getting warmed up,” Robertson told his audience. “The sixth generation of 3 Series has again set new standards with the sportiest sedan in segment and a new set of design options for further personalization. The 3 Series broke the mold in 1975 and is rewriting the rules today.”

Edmunds’ InsideLine.com’s European Correspondent Alistair Weaver got an early glimpse at the new 3 Series and found that BMW kept it safe with the redesign: “The new 3 Series offers no major surprises. This is BMW’s cash cow and the company has no reason to do anything but give an evolutionary redesign to keep it current. There was little wrong with the old model and the newcomer looks set to build on its obvious strengths while adding greater efficiency and a smidgeon more space.”
