Volkswagen To Be World's No.1 Automaker In 2011

Forget the Volkswagen Group’s much-discussed intention to become the world’s the No. 1 global automaker by 2018 – the German automaker is pacing to achieve the goal this year, according to projections from several global analysts. Volkswagen’s ascendancy to the top spot is as much because of Toyota Motor Corp.’s crippled manufacturing base for several months in 2011 and the German automaker’s hold on the crown is likely to be temporary, but Volkswagen’s global sales nonetheless are pacing to surpass both Toyota and General Motors Co. by the end of 2011.

Projections this week from IHS Automotive, J.D. Power and Associates and PwC Autofacts were used by the Bloomberg news service to calculate that Volkswagen should sell around 8 to 8.1 million new vehicles this year, GM about 7.5 million and Toyota just less than 7.3 million. The figures represent a sales increase of about 13 percent for VW, an 8-percent sales gain for GM and a 9-percent decline for Toyota, which has been struggling to recover from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan that for months severely reduced auto production for several Japanese automakers. Much of VW’s recent global sales gains have come from China and other emerging markets, but the German automaker also has been performing better than its rivals in most mature world markets as well.

Volkswagen Kills The Beetle, For Now

The Volkswagen New Beetle launched with great fanfare over a decade ago, reviving the classic Beetle name from the company's history. Yesterday at the LA Auto Show, however, VW sent the car packing.

The company hosted a press conference where they announced that 2010 would be the car's final year. To commemorate the moment, VW released a "Final Edition" special model at the show, expected to sell only 3000 units in a unique paint scheme. Half of that number will be hardtop coupes while the other half will be convertibles.

While most of the vehicle is the same as the New Beetle you could have purchased over the last few years, this new edition comes with a sport suspension and unique 17-inch wheels. The hatchback will cost $20,240 while the convertible starts at $27,170.

Retro Fabulous

Volkswagen New Beetle Overview

The New Beetle launched in 1998 to incredible amounts of media and consumer attention. It caught (or, more likely, started) the wave of retro hype that automakers fixated on during the millenium. Cars like the Ford Thunderbird arrived on the scene hoping to curry the same favor that VW found with its new-age Beetle.

The next Beetle, likely to launch in 2011 as a 2012 model, is expected to shed its cutesy, happy-go-lucky design aesthetic in favor of a more aggressive look in concert with VW's Golf, with which it will share a platform.

The Beetle is dead, long live the Beetle!

Suzuki Escalates Tiff With Volkswagen

Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp., currently 19.9-percent owned by the Volkswagen Group, announced today it served VW with a “notice of breach” of the framework agreement the two companies entered into in December, 2009. At that time, VW spent $2.5 billion for its stake in Suzuki and the Japanese automaker simultaneously purchased a small portion of VW, but since then the two companies have publicly squabbled about their displeasure with the alliance.

A statement from Suzuki said the notice requires VW to remedy “numerous breaches” of the companies’ cooperative agreement. Suzuki chairman and CEO Osamu Suzuki added, “This capital alliance was intended to facilitate Suzuki's access to VW's core technologies. I remain disappointed that we have not received what we were promised. If Volkswagen will not allow access it must return Suzuki's shares.” In September, VW accused Suzuki of breaching the terms of their linkup. It was widely believed that VW’s initial stake in Suzuki would lead to a future investment that would give VW control of the Japanese microcar specialist, but the companies continue to express displeasure with the progression of the partnership.

Volkswagen Board Approves Massive Investment Plan

The supervisory board of Germany’s Volkswagen Group approved an $86-billion, 5-year spending program for product development, assembly-plant upgrades and research and development, the company said in a statement today. The amount does not include expansion of VW’s joint ventures in China, where the company plans to spend almost another $20 billion through 2016 as the company accelerates towards its goal of becoming the world’s largest automaker by 2018.

Volkswagen currently has 62 plants globally and the VW brand alone produces more than 60 different models. The company plans to expand the model lines of its Skoda, Seat, Lamborghini and Bentley brands, as well, although a protracted effort to absorb sports car maker Porsche has encountered a raft of legal impediments and has been delayed. Although VW is expanding operations in many world regions, including the U.S., the company said more than half of the money in the new spending program will be invested in Germany.
