Mercedes SLS Black Series spied

AppId is over the quota

These pictures are proof that Mercedes is working on a hardcore 208mph Black Series version of its SLS AMG supercar. The powered-up and pared-down Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series, spied here in testing for the first time at the Nurburging, will go on sale in 2013, costing around 50 per cent more than the ‘standard’ £168,395 gullwinged-coupe.

Autocar understands the decision to make a Black Series version of the SLS was taken as far back as 2006 when development of the standard AMG supercar first begun. The Black Series’ dramatic bodywork, including a large fixed rear wing, front splitter, rear diffuser and extra cooling on the bonnet, and wider track was first previewed on the SLS GT3 racer at the 2010 New York motor show.

AMG engine boss Friedrich Eichler said in 2009 that there was still “a good deal more to come” from the SLS’s 6.2-litre V8 engine, which produces 563bhp and 479lb ft in the standard car.

Mercedes insiders have revealed that outputs of around 600bhp and 500lb ft are likely in the Black Series. A larger air manifold, higher compression ratio and reprofiled camshafts are among the tweaks expected. A mechanical locking differential is also tipped to be included as part of the Black Series upgrades and the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox will be beefed up to handle the extra torque.

These performance upgrades, plus a 50kg reduction in kerb weight and improved aerodynamic package, are expected to result in a 0-62mph time of 3.5sec and a top speed of 208mph. The standard SLS can crack 0-62mph in 3.8sec and reach a top speed of 197mph.

Mercedes plans BMW X6 rival

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

Mercedes will introduce a coupe-SUV crossover rival for the BMW X6 in 2015, Autocar understands. The German luxury giant confirmed today that “an entirely new Mercedes-Benz model” would roll off the production line at its Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant in four years’ time as part of a $350 million (about £220m) investment.

Although the exact model to be built at the plant has not been named by Mercedes, the choice of the Tuscaloosa plant to build it is a significant one. This plant is home to the new ML model, which Autocar revealed in June would be spawning a sporty four-seat variant called GLS, although the MLC name remains a possibility.

“This new model from the Tuscaloosa plant is an important element of our growth strategy,” said Mercedes chief Dieter Zetsche. “It is one of the ten additional models which we will introduce within the next four years alone across all segments.”

The GLS will forgo the practicality of the five-seat M-class for a more sporting four-seat interior, with a racier roofline and styling cues from the CLS saloon.

The obvious competitor is the BMW X6, which has been a surprise success with 120,000 sold worldwide since 2009, but it will also face competition in the shape of a new Audi Q6, planned for 2016. And a new Range Rover Sport will be on sale in 2013/14.

Further details are scarce, but powertrains should include turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 and 4.6 V8 petrols, plus a 3.0 V6 diesel. Also planned is a diesel-electric hybrid. Crowning the new line-up will be a BMW X6 M-rivalling model from AMG with a turbocharged 5.5-litre V8.

Mercedes SL - latest spy pics

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota

These are the latest spy pics of the Mercedes-Benz SL — the car with which the forthcoming rear-wheel-drive SLC is set to share selected chassis components and electrical architecture. The seventh-generation SL roadster is due to reach the UK in around spring next year.

Codenamed R231, the new SL has been thoroughly re-engineered as part of a weight-saving programme that’s set to affect all future Mercedes-Benz models.

The biggest change is the adoption of an aluminium body structure in place of the high-strength steel construction of today’s SL. Using solutions first applied to the SLS, the new SL is said to have achieved weight savings of up to 200kg, model for model — and that’s despite an improved level of safety and added standard equipment across the range.

The new two-seater’s styling is a predictable evolution of the familiar SL theme, with a long nose, steeply raked windscreen and relatively long boot aimed at providing space for a folding hard-top.

The car’s styling details closely follow the approach taken with the new SLK. There is a large, open grille, angular headlamps with distinctive LED graphics, a heavily contoured bonnet, signature side air vent, heavily structured flanks and a tapered rear end whose width is emphasised by tail-lights that wrap right around to the body sides.

The new car remains much the same size as today’s SL: 4135mm in length, 1810mm in width and 1300mm in height. However, the wheelbase is slightly longer in a bid to liberate more interior space and provide improved packaging of the folding hard-top for greater luggage capacity.

As with the third-generation SLK, the new SL will offer Mercedes-Benz’s Magic Sky Control roof as an option among a raft of advanced technological features.

The roof’s glass structure, integrated into the hard-top’s aluminium frame, uses an electronically controlled process to alter the level of tint and intensity of the UV light entering the cabin at the press of a button.

Among the petrol engines set to appear in the new upmarket roadster are Mercedes-Benz’s new naturally aspirated 302bhp 3.5-litre V6 and a 429bhp twin-turbocharged 4.6-litre V8.

At a later stage, there will be a new 630bhp twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V12, which will feature cylinder shutdown on part throttle for added fuel efficiency. There will also be an AMG variant, running a 536bhp twin-turbocharged 5.5-litre V8.

Unlike today’s SL, which is assembled at Mercedes-Benz’s plant in Bremen, Germany, the new one will be produced at the company’s main factory in Sindelfingen. The move is aimed at gearing up Sindelfingen to produce a greater number of aluminium-based models, including the SLC, which will be produced alongside the new SL.

Mercedes gets small to regain traction

AppId is over the quota
AppId is over the quota
Daimler Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche had been at the helm of the German luxury automaker less than a year when in 2006 he moved to stanch the eroding position of his flagship Mercedes-Benz unit. The storied brand had fallen behind rival BMW, while Volkswagen’s Audi line was in hot pursuit. Zetsche’s answer to the crisis? Think small. Despite the fact that Mercedes’s reputation was based on the strength of big sedans for the middle-aged affluent, Zetsche figured that a range of upscale small vehicles would raise Daimler’s near-term sales volume and attract a younger generation of buyers to propel the brand for years to come. “We were running the risk that our people assume it’s a law of nature that we grow slower than BMW and Audi,” says Zetsche. “A mindset like that is poison.”

The first fruit of Zetsche’s plan, the diminutive Mercedes B-Class, was unveiled on Sept. 13 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt. The vehicle is built on a platform Mercedes engineers designed to eventually be shared by five different small models, ranging from a hatchback to a sport-utility vehicle. The new B-Class starts at €26,000 ($35,055), compared with €32,700 ($44,088) for a C-Class sedan and €71,900 ($96,939) for the flagship S-Class. Daimler, which is investing €1.4 billion ($1.9 billion) in two small-car factories, is counting on the new models to help it retake first place in global luxury car sales by 2020. “It’s impossible to tell our customers, employees, and investors that we accept being No. 3,” says Zetsche.

Bloomberg Businessweek: Audi to beat Mercedes in 2011 sales as demand exceeds targets

In 2001, Mercedes was the clear leader, delivering 233,000 more cars than BMW and 390,000 more than Audi. Over the past decade, the two German rivals increased sales five times more than Mercedes, as they moved quickly into growing markets such as compact SUVs and expanded into China and other fast-growing nations. Through the first eight months of 2011, Mercedes’s global sales trail BMW’s by 95,200 and Audi’s by 54,700.

In the U.S., Mercedes buyers are older — 54 years on average vs. 49 for BMW and 48 for Audi, according to researcher Strategic Vision. “The age structure of Mercedes’s customers is challenging, to put it politely,” says Jorgen Meyer, a fund manager with SEB Asset Management. “If Mercedes succeeds in drawing younger customers to the brand, they’d clear their biggest hurdle.”

Bloomberg Businessweek: Mercedes sees market share driven by S-Class for young

Mercedes’s lineup is in the midst of a makeover led by Gorden Wagener, who became the youngest design chief in its 125-year history when he took the job in 2008 at age 39. The former competitive wakeboarder has brought a sportier, bolder styling to the brand. “A youthful appeal is important for the brand’s image and its long-term success,” says Joachim Schmidt, head of sales and marketing at Mercedes. “Once you get these customers and if you convince them with your products and service, it’s very likely [you’ll] have them for life.”

Mercedes is trying unconventional methods to reach a younger, hipper clientele. In July it hosted a three-day party in Berlin dubbed Avant/Garde Diaries in an effort to become cool by association. Designers and artists were invited to talk about what’s cutting edge. On display at the event, quietly bidding for the blessing of the trendsetters, was a concept version of the new A-Class. A similar event is planned for New York.

Not everyone is convinced. Mercedes is risking its classic position, says Peter Saville, a designer of record covers who contributed to the Berlin event. “Mercedes-Benz doesn’t need to be hip; it belongs to the grownup world,” says Saville, who owns a 1998 SL500. “Their position has been stolen by Audi. Audi is the new Mercedes-Benz. It’s clean. It’s reductive. It’s minimal. It doesn’t try too hard.”

Still, Daimler executives say Mercedes must learn to thrive beyond its franchise, upscale sedans. Says Jürgen Hubbert, the former head of Mercedes: “If we had just listened to the traditionalists, we would just be an E- and S-Class company and probably the 15th brand of another group.”

The bottom line: Mercedes, now No. 3 in luxury autos worldwide, is investing €1.4 billion to make five small luxury models in an attempt to regain share.

First drive: Mercedes SLS Roadster

For a car not fast and handy enough, is it? An easy way to the ground is no longer a USP fast. You get in a limousine. We hear not someone accused, 4-doors, such as the M5 and E63 AMG be "a bit slow from a to B".

For Supercars, apart from the Hyperpowered salons and big-money gt can be they add some unforgettable feeling to the mix. The intimate atmosphere of the street, the holler of a motor. Or of course, the wind through your skull.

We are therefore of the SLS AMG to love Roadster. If you have set up micro-sensitive telematics, we are willing to bet that speed compared with the Tin top Gullwing recognize brother is not a difference in linear or round a track you. But by God, which makes the Roadster, you think that it is a completely different League faster.

See more pictures of the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster

The epic 571bhp suction V8 as time curvature is fast, as it is in the Gullwing. But if the fact that even your spleen is packaging the spine round is not enough, keep you speeding with the roof down in the Roadster tell about, that you have a direct acoustic path of the exhaust. It is an extraordinary Canon sound to go with the force. A belly shaking, the ROAR that hilariously multiplies the feeling of speed.

And roof down, it's breeze. Nothing drastic - there are no which erupted as you on a four-seater convertible. The seats are heated, and 'Airscarf' fans blowing hot air on the back of the neck of the headrests. But there is much to amp up your impression of movement. And isn't that why we drive, as in the first place?

I'm struggling as a disadvantage. Roof of the dome up in the rain, quiet and isolated. The handling and steering, roof top or the bottom, are monsters with an ESP system that wriggles quite enough, so that you know that you are printing in accordance with the SLS - a proper old-school rear-wheel drive. The Roadster £ 176.895 is more than the Gullwing, but it is somewhat trivial when compared to the General ticket SLS-land.

The Roadster makes a little bit better, SLS life if you're going flat out, and that's all good. But much more importantly, it is the experience of 11, also if you do not.
