Video: more on the Nissan Juke-R

AppId is over the quota

When we first told you about the proposed Nissan Juke-R with the engine and drivetrain from a GT-R, you thought, "grand". The only problem is building the ruddy thing.

Because if you think the Nissan GT-R conjures up its ethereal speed and stomach-shrivelling grip using witchcraft and sorcery, the following may surprise you: it uses something called ‘electronics'.

The 480bhp Nissan Juke: this is it

An army of digital helpers sit underneath the GT-R's bodyshell keeping it very straight and very fast, and transposing these into the diddy Juke requires more than a spanner and some tea. Nissan knows this. Especially since that army helps the 1700kg GT-R accelerate from 0-62mph in three seconds and a top speed of 196mph.

The videos below show a few of the engineering hurdles Nissan will have to vault in order to shoehorn said engine and gearbox and four-wheel-drive system into said crossover SUV. It's not easy, and it isn't covered by Haynes, so don't try it at home.

Extreme Juke-R takes shape

Engineers working on the Nissan Juke-R project have spoken about the challenges of splicing the underpinnings of the Nissan GT-R sports car with its compact crossover.

As reported by Autocar last week the Japanese manufacturer is building an extreme 480bhp version of its Nissan Juke-R.

The car, which will use the V6 engine, powertrain and electrical technology of the Nissan GT-R under a Juke bodyshell is intended to gauge public reaction to a ‘hot’ version of the niche supermini.

Darren Cox, General Manager Crossover and Sports for Nissan in Europe, said: “There are many engineering challenges on this project and one that really interests me is the fact we have a very small package in the Juke, and we’re trying to pack a huge amount of technology in it. One of the things that people probably don’t realise about the GT-R is the amount of electronics and computing power it has got to make it go as fast as it goes.”

The Juke-R is a collaboration between Nissan and motorsport preparation firm RML. Chris Horton, Lead Engineer for RML, said: “There are three areas of key technology that we’ll be using in the Juke-R.

“The first is the 4WD system – that has the traction control and stability control and most importantly the torque-vectoring system. Torque vectoring is the way of controlling each wheel individually, so the car is both stable and maximises the performance available.

“The second is the touchscreen driver interface, which gives the driver the gauges, the g-meter and all the boost dials, along with the sat-nav and entertainment system. Finally, there’s the boost and engine control.”

The Juke-R build is underway, with test and development work due to commence before the end of the year.

“We’re creating a design study utilising a GT-R powertrain, shortening it by 250mm and then using a test facility to run the car, instrument it and then analyse the data to make sure the results are positive,” said Horton

“The changes to fit the GT-R running gear into a Juke will require the entire floorpan to be removed and the whole thing to be rebuilt to pick up all of the GT-R mounting points.

“Once we’ve established that it will all work, the real business of building the Juke-R will begin.”

Nissan confirmed 480bhp Juke-R

Nissan has indicated a high performance version of the juke where public reaction to this wild 480bhp concept based on GT-R is positive.

The juke-R confirmed by Nissan today last week - GT-R after much speculation with 3.8 liter Biturbo V6 engine of flagship Nissan, and also used a modified version of the Coupé 4WD drive, as well as its six-speed transaxle.

Although the Japanese manufacturer, that is the car itself, not for the production says, it adds a unique concept "is the juke-R to test the reaction of the audience on a seriously sporty Juke". The juke is currently 1, 6-liter and 1, 6-liter turbo gasoline units and a 1, 5-litre dCi turbodiesel engine offered.

Paul Wilcox, senior Vice President for sales and marketing for Nissan in Europe, said: "Juke is perfectly suited for a sports derivative and Juke-R explored this area." "It shows two of the most interesting vehicles in our collection and highlights the technical innovation, the Nissan drives."

Two examples of the juke-R will be produced - each one in the right and left drive. The Interior is equipped with gauges, dials and the LCD screen by GT-r. Although the car Street is legal, it has competition-spec technology such as two race seats, five point harnesses, and a competition-spec roll cage.

The juke-R RML was developed by Motorsport preparation specialist, technical center with contributions by Nissan for Europe at Cranfield, Bedfordshire. The car is still in development and is expected to begin in November tests.
