General Motors Co. announced today that it will join with Chinese partner SAIC Motor Corp. Ltd. to develop a dedicated electric-vehicle vehicle architecture for the Chinese market and that foundation will serve both companies for EVs in other markets. The joint development program will be centered at SAIC and GM’s Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), the companies’ engineering and design joint venture in Shanghai. In a statement, GM said “joint teams from the parent companies will also cooperate on the development of key components and vehicle structures.”
The two companies have some experience in electric-car cooperation: last year, the Shanghai GM joint venture unveiled a battery electric concept car called the Sail. GM said for the new co-development program, teams of SAIC, GM and PATAC engineers will work together to develop key components, as well as vehicle structures and architectures. “Vehicles resulting from the partnership will be sold in China under Shanghai GM and SAIC brands,” GM said, adding that “SAIC and GM will also use the architecture to build electric vehicles around the globe for their own purposes.”
