Claiming the largest-ever commercial order of EV-charging stations, 350Green has purchased 1,500 stations from Annapolis-based SemaConnect. "EVs will never become truly mainstream until there is adequate public infrastructure support," said Mariana Gerzanych, CEO of San Diego-based 350Green. "These 1,500 chargers and our national network are aimed at getting us over the hump." The purchase price for the 1,500 ChargePro stations wasn't disclosed. 350Green had announced in July that it would install EV charging stations at 425 Walgreens stores, with many of the first stations being deployed in New York City. In April the company said it had installed stations at Simon Property Group's Florida Mall in Orlando and the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, Calif. Simon Property Group is the largest owner of U.S. shopping malls.
Electric-vehicle proponents see publicly accessible EV charging stations as critical to boosting demand for EVs, as many prospective buyers want to have the option of charging their cars away from their homes. Pike Research Senior Analyst John Gartner estimated in May that by 2015, Americans will have public access to about 21,500 charging stations in places such as retail stores, restaurants and municipal parking lots. There now are about 1,400 publically accessible EV charging stations in the United States, up from about 800 as of six months ago, according to the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels & Advanced Vehicles Data Center.
