Fiat Automotive said today it will build an all-new 4-cylinder turbocharged engine for its Alfa Romeo brand that can be used for either transverse or longitudinal orientation, making it suitable for either front-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive vehicles. Displacement for the new is 1.8 liters but it will generate as much as 300 horsepower, the company said in a release today.

The turbocharged 4-cylinder will be built in Fiat’s Pratolo Serra plant in Italy beginning in 2013 and will be compliant with Euro VI and U.S. emissions regulations. The Fiat announcement of the new engine also confirmed the company plans a 2013 timeframe for the reintroduction of the Alfa Romeo brand in the United States, which remains the brand’s “primary objective,” according to Harald J. Wester, head of the Alfa Romeo and Maserati brands and chief technology officer.
